How Many Days Do You Need for a Tanzania Safari?

How long should a Tanzania safari be? What you can see in 3–4, 5–7 and 8+ days on the northern circuit, plus adding Zanzibar.

The quick guide

For a northern Tanzania safari, five to seven days is the sweet spot for most travellers. It allows time for Tarangire or Lake Manyara, two or more nights in the Serengeti and a morning in the Ngorongoro Crater without long, tiring days.

Shorter trips are possible and still rewarding; longer trips add depth, slower mornings and more chances for special sightings.

With three days, focus on Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater. With four, you can reach the Serengeti for a full day of game driving before returning via the crater.

This works well as an add-on to Zanzibar or a business trip, but expect some long drives.

5 to 7 days: the classic northern circuit

Five days covers Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro at a comfortable pace. Six or seven days lets you add Lake Manyara, spend extra time in the Serengeti or follow the Great Migration to its seasonal location.

This is also the right length for a cultural visit to a Maasai community, a walking safari or a sunrise balloon flight.

8 days or more: depth and flexibility

Longer safaris allow you to explore different regions of the Serengeti, such as the remote north or the southern calving plains, and to fly between parks to save driving time.

Many travellers end with three to five nights on Zanzibar. A ten-day safari-and-beach trip is one of our most popular combinations.
