TANZANIA DESTINATION

Serengeti National Park

Endless plains, exceptional predators and the Great Migration.

WHY VISIT

A place that stays with you.

Tanzania's most celebrated wilderness rewards every season with vast horizons, abundant resident wildlife and dramatic predator encounters.

Covering almost 15,000 square kilometres, Serengeti National Park is the heart of one of the largest intact ecosystems on Earth. Its name comes from the Maasai word for 'endless plains', and the short-grass plains of the south, the kopje-studded centre and the river woodlands of the north each feel like a different safari.

The Serengeti is famous for the Great Migration, the year-round circuit of more than a million wildebeest with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. Just as rewarding are its resident predators: the central Seronera valley is one of Africa's most reliable areas for lion, leopard and cheetah sightings.

A private Serengeti safari lets your guide follow fresh information rather than a fixed route. We usually recommend at least two nights, and three or more if the migration or big cats are your priority.

Getting there.

Most travellers drive from Arusha via Tarangire or Ngorongoro, a scenic full-day journey with game viewing on the way. Scheduled light aircraft also connect Arusha to airstrips across the Serengeti in about an hour.

Serengeti questions.

When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?

June to October is the classic dry season with easy game viewing and river crossings in the north (usually July to September). January to March brings the calving season to the southern plains around Ndutu. The Serengeti is rewarding all year; the best area simply moves with the season.

How many days do I need in the Serengeti?

Two full days is a good minimum, which usually means three nights. Migration-focused trips often spend four or more nights so you can reach the right region without rushing.
